God's Words of Comfort

A Portion of God's Holy Word Regarding:

Grief – Sorrow – Bereavement – Death – Tears

[God struck down David and Bathsheba’s illegitimate son, and David grieves for him. See 2 Samuel 11:1-12:23:]
David said, "While the child was alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, 'Who can tell whether the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?' But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me." 2 Samuel 12:22-23 (NKJV)
The waves of death had surrounded me. The torrents of destruction had overwhelmed me. The ropes of the grave had surrounded me. The clutches of death had confronted me. I called on the LORD in my distress. I called to my God for help. He heard my voice from his temple, and my cry for help reached his ears. 2 Samuel 22:5-7 (GOD’S WORD®)
Red California SunsetYou will forget your misery; you will remember it as waters that have passed away. And your life will be brighter than the noonday; its darkness will be like the morning. Job 11:16-17 (RSV)
For I know that my Redeemer lives, and on the last day I will rise out of the earth. And I will be enveloped again with my skin, and in my flesh I will see my God. It is He whom I myself will see, and He whom my eyes will behold, and no other. This, my hope, has taken rest in my bosom. Job 19:25-27 (CPDV)
My eye wastes away because of grief; it grows weak because of all my foes. Depart from me, all you workers of evil, for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping. The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord accepts my prayer. Psalms 6:7-9 (ESV)
Rise up, O Lord; O God, lift up Your hand; do not forget the oppressed. Why do the wicked renounce God, and say in their hearts, "You will not call us to account"? But You do see! Indeed You note trouble and grief, that You may take it into Your hands; the helpless commit themselves to You; You have been the helper of the orphan. Psalms 10:12-14 (NRSV)
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me… Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. Psalms 23:4, 6 (KJV)
Turn to me, and have mercy on me, For I am desolate and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged. Oh bring me out of my distresses. Consider my affliction and my travail. Forgive all my sins. Consider my enemies, for they are many. They hate me with cruel hatred. Oh keep my soul, and deliver me. Let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in You. Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, For I wait for You. Psalms 25:16-21 (HNV)
Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. Psalms 30:5 (KJV)
Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my eye is wasted from grief, my soul and my body also. For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing; my strength fails because of my misery, and my bones waste away… But I trust in Thee, O LORD, I say, "Thou art my God." My times are in Thy hand; deliver me from the hand of my enemies and persecutors! Psalms 31:9-10, 14-15 (RSV)

But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for He shall receive me. Psalms 49:15 (KJV)
[The following verses are from David’s Prayer of Pardon and Cleansing (Psalms 51:1-17), written after Nathan the prophet had informed him of God’s judgment against him for his adultery with Bathsheba, and his subsequent murder of Uriah, her husband. See 2 Samuel 11 – 12:23:]
Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your loving kindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin… Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me hear joy and gladness, That the bones You have broken may rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins, And blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me… Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight--That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge… Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit… For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart--These, O God, You will not despise. Psalms 51:1-2, 4, 7-10, 12, 16-17 (NKJV)
Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never permit the righteous to be moved. Psalms 55:22 (NRSV)

You are my God, so be merciful to me; I pray to You all day long. Make Your servant glad, O Lord, because my prayers go up to You. Psalms 86:1-4 (GNT)

Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His holy ones. Psalms 116:15 (HNV)
I would have despaired and perished unless Your Laws had been my deepest delight. I will never lay aside Your Laws, for You have used them to restore my joy and health. I am Yours! Save me! For I have tried to live according to Your desires. Though the wicked hide along the way to kill me, I will quietly keep my mind upon Your promises. Psalms 119:92-95 (TLB)
Lord, make us prosperous again,  just as the rain brings water back to dry riverbeds. Let those who wept as they planted their crops, gather the harvest with joy! Those who wept as they went out carrying the seed will come back singing for joy, as they bring in the harvest. Psalms 126:4-6 (GNT)

The people ransomed by the LORD will return. They will come to Zion singing with joy. Everlasting happiness will be on their heads as a crown. They will be glad and joyful. They will have no sorrow or grief. Isaiah 51:11 (GOD’S WORD®)
He was despised and rejected by others; a Man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity; and as one from whom others hide their faces He was despised, and we held Him of no account. Surely He has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the punishment that made us whole, and by His bruises we are healed. Isaiah 53:3-5 (NRSV)

Giant Tree RootsThose who live good lives find peace and rest in death. Isaiah 57:2 (GNT)
The Sovereign Lord has filled me with His Spirit. He has chosen me and sent me to bring Good News to the poor, to heal the broken-hearted, to announce release to captives and freedom to those in prison. He has sent me to proclaim that the time has come when the Lord will save His people and defeat their enemies. He has sent me to comfort all who mourn, to give to those who mourn in Zion joy and gladness instead of grief, a song of praise instead of sorrow. They will be like trees that the Lord Himself has planted. They will all do what is right, and God will be praised for what He has done. Isaiah 61:1-3 (GNT)
"Look, I will make new heavens and a new earth, and people will not remember the past or think about those things. My people will be happy forever because of the things I will make. "He who disowns Me before men will be disowned before the angels of God." Luke 12:9 (WNT)
"Unless you turn to God, you too will die." Luke 13:3 (The Message)
He was in the world, and the world came into existence through Him, and the world did not recognize Him. He came to the things that were His own, and His own people gave Him no welcome. But all who have received Him, to them--that is, to those who trust in His name--He has given the privilege of becoming children of God. John 1:10-12 (WNT)
"Whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:15-16 (KJV)
"And the Father Himself who sent Me has given proof about Me. You have never heard His voice or seen what He looks like. His teaching does not live in you, because you don't believe in the One the Father sent… I have come from My Father and speak for Him, but you don't accept Me. But when another person comes, speaking only for himself, you will accept him." John 5:37-38, 43 (NCV™)
"It is as I said to you: you have seen Me, and still you have no faith. Whatever the Father gives to Me will come to Me; and I will not send away anyone who comes to Me." John 6:36-37 (BBE)
"In most solemn truth I tell you that he who believes has the Life of the Ages." John 6:47 (WNT)
"In most solemn truth I tell you that if any one shall have obeyed My teaching he shall in no case ever see death." John 8:51 (WNT)
"I am the Resurrection and the Life," said Jesus; "he who believes in Me, even if he has died, he shall live; and every one who is living and is a believer in Me shall never, never die. Do you believe this?" John 11:25-26 (WNT)
"Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to Myself, that where I am you may be also." John 14:1-3 (ESV)
"Truly, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to Me, but the world will rejoice. John 16:20, 22 (NLT)
"I have said all these things to you so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble: but take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33 (BBE)
He who has died has been freed from sin. Romans 6:7 (WEB)

What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? Romans 8:31 (NRSV)
Pink DahliaFor I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 (NRSV)
Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Romans 12:15 (KJV)
Christ did not think only of Himself. Rather, as Scripture says, "The insults of those who insult you have fallen on Me." Everything written long ago was written to teach us so that we would have confidence through the endurance and encouragement which the Scriptures give us. Romans 15:3-4 (GOD’S WORD®)

Christ has truly been raised from the dead -- the first one and proof that those who sleep in death will also be raised. Death has come because of what one man did, but the rising from death also comes because of one Man. In Adam all of us die. In the same way, in Christ all of us will be made alive again. But everyone will be raised to life in the right order. Christ was first to be raised. When Christ comes again, those who belong to Him will be raised to life, and then the end will come. At that time Christ will destroy all rulers, authorities, and powers, and He will hand over the Kingdom to God the Father. Christ must rule until He puts all enemies under His control. The last enemy to be destroyed will be death. 1 Corinthians 15:20-26 (NCV™)
But let me tell you a wonderful secret God has revealed to us. Not all of us will die, but we will all be transformed. It will happen in a moment, in the blinking of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, the Christians who have died will be raised with transformed bodies. And then we who are living will be transformed so that we will never die. For our perishable earthly bodies must be transformed into heavenly bodies that will never die.
When this happens, when our perishable earthly bodies have been transformed into heavenly bodies that will never die, then at last the Scriptures will come true: "Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?" For sin is the sting that results in death, and the Law gives sin its power. How we thank God, who gives us victory over sin and death through Jesus Christ our Lord! 1 Corinthians 15:51-57 (NLT)
Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the merciful Father, the God from whom all help comes! He helps us in all our troubles, so that we are able to help others who have all kinds of troubles, using the same help that we ourselves have received from God. Just as we have a share in Christ's many sufferings, so also through Christ we share in God's great help. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 (GNT)
For we know that when this tent we live in—our body here on earth—is torn down, God will have a house in Heaven for us to live in, a home He Himself has made, which will last forever. 2 Corinthians 5:1 (GNT)
So that I would not become too proud of the wonderful things that were shown to me, a painful physical problem was given to me. This problem was a messenger from Satan, sent to beat me and keep me from being too proud. I begged the Lord three times to take this problem away from me. But He said to me, "My grace is enough for you. When you are weak, my power is made perfect in you." So I am very happy to brag about my weaknesses. Then Christ's power can live in me. For this reason I am happy when I have weaknesses, insults, hard times, sufferings, and all kinds of troubles for Christ. Because when I am weak, then I am truly strong. 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 (NCV™)
Christ means everything to me in this life, and when I die I'll have even more. If I continue to live in this life, my work will produce more results. I don't know which I would prefer. I find it hard to choose between the two. I would like to leave this life and be with Christ. That's by far the better choice. Philippians 1:21-23 (GOD’S WORD®)

AnvilheadsNo, dear brothers and sisters, I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us up to Heaven. Philippians 3:13-14 (NLT)
Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth. Colossians 3:2 (WEB)
Brothers and sisters, we want you to know about those Christians who have died so you will not be sad, as others who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and that He rose again. So, because of Him, God will raise with Jesus those who have died. What we tell you now is the Lord's own Message. We who are living when the Lord comes again will not go before those who have already died. The Lord Himself will come down from Heaven with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. And those who have died believing in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive will be gathered up with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And we will be with the Lord forever. So encourage each other with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (NCV™)
Jesus died for us so that we can live together with Him, whether we are alive or dead when He comes. So encourage each other and give each other strength, just as you are doing now. 1 Thessalonians 5:10-11 (NCV™)
We brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 1 Timothy 6:7 (RSV)
The time for my departure is now close at hand. I have gone through the glorious contest; I have run the race; I have guarded the faith. From this time onward there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but also to all who love the thought of His Appearing. 2 Timothy 4:6-8 (WNT)

BandW RapidsBe glad about this, even though it may now be necessary for you to be sad for a while because of the many kinds of trials you suffer. Their purpose is to prove that your faith is genuine. Even gold, which can be destroyed, is tested by fire; and so your faith, which is much more precious than gold, must also be tested, so that it may endure. Then you will receive praise and glory and honor on the Day when Jesus Christ is revealed. You love Him, although you have not seen Him, and you believe in Him, although you do not now see Him. So you rejoice with a great and glorious joy which words cannot express, because you are receiving the salvation of your souls, which is the purpose of your faith in Him. 1 Peter 1:6-9 (GNT)
"They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their Shepherd, and He will guide them to springs of living water; and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." Revelation 7:16-17 (RSV)
Then I heard a voice from Heaven saying, "Write this: Happy are those who from now on die in the service of the Lord! Yes indeed!" answers the Spirit. "They will enjoy rest from their hard work, because the results of their service go with them." Revelation 14:13 (GNT)
Blessed and holy are those who share in the First Resurrection. The Second Death has no power over them, but they shall be priests to God and to Christ, and shall be kings with Christ for the thousand years… Then Death and Hades were thrown into the Lake of fire; this is the Second Death--the Lake of fire. Revelation 20:6, 14 (WNT)
I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be His peoples, and God Himself will be with them; He will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away." Revelation 21:3-4 (NRSV)
