God's Words of Comfort

A Portion of God's Holy Word Regarding:

Anger – God's Anger – Temper – Resentment – Restraint – Wrath

The Lord said to Moses, "How long will this people despise Me? And how long will they refuse to believe in Me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them?" Numbers 14:11 (KJV)

The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek Him; but His power and His wrath is against all them that forsake Him. Ezra 8:22 (KJV)

All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils; My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit. Job 27:3-4 (KJV)

Sing praises to the Lord, O you His faithful ones, and give thanks to His holy name. For His anger is but for a moment; His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning. Psalms 30:4-5 (NRSV)

Don't give in to worry or anger; it only leads to trouble. Those who trust in the Lord will possess the land, but the wicked will be driven out. Psalms 37:8-9 (GNT)

Create in me a new, clean heart, O God, filled with clean thoughts and right desires. Psalms 51:10 (TLB)

You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. Psalm 86:15 (NRSV)

BW Teton Cabin CrossThe Lord is kind and full of pity, not quickly made angry, but ever ready to have mercy. His feeling will no longer be bitter; He will not keep His wrath for ever. He has not given us the punishment for our sins, or the reward of our wrongdoing. For as the Heaven is high over the earth, so great is His mercy to His worshippers. Psalms 103:8-11 (BBE)

He loved to curse—may he be cursed! He hated to give blessings—may no one bless him! He cursed as naturally as he dressed himself; may his own curses soak into his body like water and into his bones like oil! May they cover him like clothes and always be around him like a belt! Psalms 109:17-19 (GNT)

Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses. Proverbs 10:12 (RSV)

Someone with a quick temper does foolish things, but someone with understanding remains calm. Proverbs 14:17 (NCV™)

If you stay calm, you are wise, but if you have a hot temper, you only show how stupid you are. Proverbs 14:29 (GNT)

The king's favor is toward a wise servant: but his wrath is against him that causeth shame. Proverbs 14:35 (KJV)

A gentle answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1 (WEB)

Better is a simple meal where love is, than a fat ox and hate with it. An angry man makes men come to blows, but he who is slow to get angry puts an end to fighting. Proverbs 15:17-18 (BBE)

Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. Proverbs 16:24 (KJV)

Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense. Proverbs 19:11 (ESV)

If someone has a hot temper, let him take the consequences. If you get him out of trouble once, you will have to do it again. Proverbs 19:19 (GNT)

It is an honor for a man to keep from fighting, but the foolish are ever at war. Proverbs 20:3 (BBE)

Whoever guards his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles. Proverbs 21:23 (WEB)

Destruction is certain for those who argue with their Creator. Does a clay pot ever argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying, "Stop, you are doing it wrong!" Does the pot exclaim, "How clumsy can you be!" How terrible it would be if a newborn baby said to its father and mother, "Why was I born? Why did you make me this way?"
This is what the LORD, the Creator and Holy One of Israel, says: "Do you question what I do? Do you give Me orders about the work of My hands? I am the One who made the earth and created people to live on it. With My hands I stretched out the heavens. All the millions of stars are at My command." Isaiah 45:9-12 (NLT)

"Don't go after other gods to serve them or worship them, and don't provoke Me to anger with the work of your hands; and I will do you no harm." Jeremiah 25:6 (WEB)

The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. The LORD has His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet. Nahum 1:3 (HNV)

Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord's wrath. Zephaniah 1:18 (HNV)

Fall Colors NNThere at the Jordan River those who came to confess their sins were baptized into a changed life. When John realized that a lot of Pharisees and Sadducees were showing up for a baptismal experience because it was becoming the popular thing to do, he exploded: "Brood of snakes! What do you think you're doing slithering down here to the river? Do you think a little water on your snake skins is going to make any difference? It's your life that must change, not your skin!
"And don't think you can pull rank by claiming Abraham as father. Being a descendant of Abraham is neither here nor there. Descendants of Abraham are a dime a dozen. What counts is your life. Is it green and blossoming? Because if it's deadwood, it goes on the fire." Matthew 3:6-10 (The Message)

"You have heard that people were told in the past, 'Do not commit murder; anyone who does will be brought to trial.' But now I tell you: if you are angry with your brother you will be brought to trial, if you call your brother 'You good-for-nothing!' you will be brought before the Council, and if you call your brother a worthless fool you will be in danger of going to the fire of hell. So if you are about to offer your gift to God at the altar and there you remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar, go at once and make peace with your brother, and then come back and offer your gift to God." Matthew 5:21-24 (GNT)

"But I say to you who give ear to Me, have love for those who are against you, do good to those who have hate for you, give blessing to those who give you curses, say prayers for those who are cruel to you. If a man gives you a blow on one side of your face, then let the other side be turned to him; from him who takes away your coat, do not keep back your robe. Give to everyone who comes with a request, and if a man takes away your property, make no attempt to get it back again. Do to others as you would have them do to you. If you have love for those who have love for you, what credit is it to you? For even sinners have love for those who have love for them." Luke 6:27-32 (BBE)

A good man produces good deeds from a good heart. An evil man produces evil deeds from his hidden wickedness. Whatever is in the heart overflows into speech. Luke 6:45 (TLB)

Then He said to them all, "If any want to become My followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me." Luke 9:23 (NRSV)

So then, my friends, because of God's great mercy to us I appeal to you: Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to His service and pleasing to Him. This is the true worship that you should offer. Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God—what is good and is pleasing to Him and is perfect. Romans 12:1-2 (GNT)

Misty Green ValleyBless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse… Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Try to do what is honorable in everyone's eyes. If possible, on your part, live at peace with everyone. Friends, do not avenge yourselves; instead, leave room for His wrath. For it is written: "Vengeance belongs to Me; I will repay," says the Lord. Romans 12:14, 17-19 (HCSB)

Don't be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21 (WEB)

Cultivate your own relationship with God, but don't impose it on others. You're fortunate if your behavior and your belief are coherent. Romans 14:22 (The Message)

The whole Law is made complete in this one command: "Love your neighbor as you love yourself." If you go on hurting each other and tearing each other apart, be careful, or you will completely destroy each other. So I tell you: Live by following the Spirit. Then you will not do what your sinful selves want. Galatians 5:14-16 (NCV™)

If the Spirit is leading you, you are not under the Law. The wrong things the sinful self does are clear: being sexually unfaithful, not being pure, taking part in sexual sins, worshiping gods, doing witchcraft, hating, making trouble, being jealous, being angry, being selfish, making people angry with each other, causing divisions among people, feeling envy, being drunk, having wild and wasteful parties, and doing other things like these. I warn you now as I warned you before: Those who do these things will not inherit God's Kingdom. Galatians 5:18-21 (NCV™)

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Galatians 5:24 (ESV)

"Don't sin by letting anger gain control over you." Don't let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a mighty foothold to the Devil. Ephesians 4:26-27 (NLT)

Don't say anything that would hurt [another person]. Instead, speak only what is good so that you can give help wherever it is needed. That way, what you say will help those who hear you… Get rid of your bitterness, hot tempers, anger, loud quarreling, cursing, and hatred. Be kind to each other, sympathetic, forgiving each other as God has forgiven you through Christ. Ephesians 4:29, 31-32 (GOD’S WORD®)

Now a word to you fathers. Don't make your children angry by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction approved by the Lord. Ephesians 6:4 (NLT)

So I am sure that God, who began this good work in you, will carry it on until it is finished on the Day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6 (GNT)

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13 (NKJV)

Therefore put to death your earthward inclinations--fornication, impurity, sensual passion, unholy desire, and all greed, for that is a form of idolatry. It is on account of these very sins that God's anger is coming, and you also were once addicted to them, while you were living under their power. But now you must rid yourselves of every kind of sin--angry and passionate outbreaks, ill-will, evil speaking, foul-mouthed abuse--so that these may never soil your lips. Colossians 3:5-8 (WNT)

Don't get involved in arguing over unanswerable questions and controversial theological ideas; keep out of arguments and quarrels about obedience to Jewish laws, for this kind of thing isn't worthwhile; it only does harm. Titus 3:9 (TLB)

We know who it is that has said, "Vengeance belongs to Me: I will pay back;" and again, "The Lord will be His people's judge." It is an awful thing to fall into the hands of the ever-living God. Hebrews 10:30-31 (WNT)

Red SunsetYou must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; for your anger does not produce God's righteousness. Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls. James 1:19-21 (NRSV)

As the One who called you is holy, you also are to be holy in all your conduct. 1 Peter 1:15 (HCSB)

Christ never verbally abused those who verbally abused Him. When He suffered, He didn't make any threats but left everything to the One who judges fairly. 1 Peter 2:23 (GOD’S WORD®)

For, "He who would love life, and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit." 1 Peter 3:10 (WEB)

Whoever says, "I am in the light," while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness. Whoever loves a brother or sister lives in the light, and in such a person there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates another believer is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and does not know the way to go, because the darkness has brought on blindness. 1 John 2:9-11 (NRSV)

The great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand? Revelation 6:17 (KJV)
