God's Words of Comfort

A Portion of God's Holy Word Regarding:

 Adultery – Carnality – Decadence – Physical Lust – Immorality – Hedonism – Sexual Impurity – Shame

"You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's." Exodus 20:17 (WEB)

You may not have sex relations with men, as you do with women: it is a disgusting thing. Leviticus 18:22 (BBE)

If a man has sex relations with a man, the two of them have done a disgusting thing: let them be put to death; their blood will be on them. Leviticus 20:13 (BBE)

Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to. 1 Kings 2:44 (KJV)

"I made an agreement with my eyes not to look with desire at a girl. What has God above promised for people? It is ruin for evil people and disaster for those who do wrong. God sees my ways and counts every step I take." Job 31:1-4 (NCV™)

[The following is the Prayer for Pardon and Cleansing, written by King David after Nathan the prophet had informed him of God’s judgment against him for his adultery with Bathsheba, and his subsequent murder of Uriah, her husband (see 2 Samuel 11 – 12:23).]
Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your loving kindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight--That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me hear joy and gladness, That the bones You have broken may rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins, And blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners shall be converted to You. Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, The God of my salvation, And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, And my mouth shall show forth Your praise.
For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart--These, O God, You will not despise. Psalms 51:1-17 (NKJV)

 San Juan Capistrano Cross
Create in me a new, clean heart, O God, filled with clean thoughts and right desires. Psalms 51:10 (TLB)

If You kept a record of our sins, who could escape being condemned? But You forgive us, so that we should stand in awe of You. Psalms 130:3-4 (GNT)

Wisdom will also save you from an adulterous woman, from a loose woman with her smooth talk, who leaves her husband, the closest friend of her youth, and forgets her marriage vows to her God. Her house sinks down to death. Her ways lead to the souls of the dead. Proverbs 2:16-18 (GOD’S WORD®)

Above all else, guard your heart, for it affects everything you do. Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)

My son, pay attention to my wisdom; listen to my words of understanding. Be careful to use good sense, and watch what you say. The words of another man's wife may seem sweet as honey; they may be as smooth as olive oil. But in the end she will bring you sorrow, causing you pain like a two-edged sword. Proverbs 5:1-4 (NCV™)

Do you know the saying, "Drink from your own rain barrel, draw water from your own spring-fed well?" It's true. Otherwise, you may one day come home and find your barrel empty and your well polluted. Your spring water is for you and you only, not to be passed around among strangers. Bless your fresh-flowing fountain! Enjoy the wife you married as a young man! Lovely as an angel, beautiful as a rose - don't ever quit taking delight in her body. Never take her love for granted!
Why would you trade enduring intimacies for cheap thrills with a whore? for dalliance with a promiscuous stranger? Mark well that God doesn't miss a move you make; He's aware of every step you take. The shadow of your sin will overtake you; you'll find yourself stumbling all over yourself in the dark. Death is the reward of an undisciplined life; your foolish decisions trap you in a dead end. Proverbs 5:15-23 (The Message)

Do not desire her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes; for a prostitute's fee is only a loaf of bread, but the wife of another stalks a man's very life. Can fire be carried in the bosom without burning one's clothes? Or can one walk on hot coals without scorching the feet? So is he who sleeps with his neighbor's wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished. Proverbs 6:25-29 (NRSV)

He who commits adultery with a woman is void of understanding. He who does it destroys his own soul. Proverbs 6:32 (WEB)

Once I was looking out the window of my house, and I saw many inexperienced young men, but noticed one foolish fellow in particular. He was walking along the street near the corner where a certain woman lived. He was passing near her house in the evening after it was dark. And then she met him; she was dressed like a prostitute and was making plans. She was a bold and shameless woman who always walked the streets or stood waiting at a corner, sometimes in the streets, sometimes in the marketplace…
Now then, sons, listen to me. Pay attention to what I say. Do not let such a woman win your heart; don't go wandering after her. She has been the ruin of many men and caused the death of too many to count. If you go to her house, you are on the way to the world of the dead. It is a shortcut to death. Proverbs 7:6-12, 24-27 (GNT)

The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them, But the unfaithful will be trapped by evil desires. Proverbs 11:6 (WEB)

The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness. Proverbs 11:6 (KJV)

Foolish people don't care if they sin, but good people want to be forgiven. Proverbs 14:9 (GNT)

Black and White Yellowstone GeyserThe LORD detests the thoughts of the wicked, But the thoughts of the pure are pleasing. Proverbs 15:26 (HNV)

Let your father and your mother be glad! Let her who bore you rejoice! My son, give me [Wisdom] your heart; And let your eyes keep in my ways. For a prostitute is a deep pit; And a wayward wife is a narrow well. Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, And increases the unfaithful among men. Proverbs 23:25-28 (WEB)

Hell has a voracious appetite, and lust just never quits. Proverbs 27:20 (The Message)

He who conceals his sins doesn't prosper, But whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Proverbs 28:13 (WEB)

A man who is a lover of wisdom is a joy to his father: but he who goes in the company of loose women is a waster of wealth. Proverbs 29:3 (BBE)

Don't spend all your energy on sex and all your money on women; they have destroyed kings. Proverbs 31:3 (GNT)

I discovered that a seductive woman is more bitter than death. Her passion is a trap, and her soft hands will bind you. Those who please God will escape from her, but sinners will be caught in her snare. Ecclesiastes 7:26 (NLT)

"Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before My eyes; cease to do evil… Come now, let us argue it out," says the Lord: "though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be like snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool." Isaiah 1:16, 18 (NRSV)

Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither His ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid His face from you, that He will not hear. Isaiah 59:1-2 (KJV)

Wash your heart from evil, that you may be saved. How long shall your wicked thoughts lodge within you? Jeremiah 4:14 (ESV)

Yellow Hibiscus"I said to them, 'Cast away the detestable things your eyes feast on, every one of you, and do not defile yourselves.'" Ezekiel 20:7 (ESV)

This is another thing you do. You drown the Lord's altar with tears, weeping and wailing because He no longer accepts the offerings you bring Him. You ask why He no longer accepts them. It is because He knows you have broken your promise to the wife you married when you were young. She was your partner, and you have broken your promise to her, although you promised before God that you would be faithful to her. Didn't God make you one body and spirit with her? What was His purpose in this? It was that you should have children who are truly God's people. So make sure that none of you breaks his promise to his wife. Malachi 2:13-15 (GNT)

"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery;' but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart." Matthew 5:27-28 (WEB)

"If your eye is pure, there will be sunshine in your soul. But if your eye is clouded with evil thoughts and desires, you are in deep spiritual darkness. And oh, how deep that darkness can be!" Matthew 6:22-23 (TLB)

"Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." Matthew 26:41 (KJV)

[This passage presents the story of Jesus and the Woman Accused of Adultery. Here, Jesus teaches us that we are all sinners and all fall short of the glory of God, and it is not up to us to judge others. Instead, Jesus wants us to show forgiveness and compassion toward the sins of others, and to help them repent.]
At break of day however He returned to the Temple, and there the people came to Him in crowds. He seated Himself; and was teaching them when the Scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had been found committing adultery. They made her stand in the center of the court, and they put the case to Him.
"Rabbi," they said, "this woman has been found in the very act of committing adultery. Now, in the Law, Moses has ordered us to stone such women to death. But what do You say?"
They asked this in order to put Him to the test, so that they might have some charge to bring against Him. But Jesus leant forward and began to write with His finger on the ground. When however they persisted with their question, He raised His head and said to them,
"Let the sinless man among you be the first to throw a stone at her."
Then He leant forward again, and again began to write on the ground. They listened to Him, and then, beginning with the eldest, took their departure, one by one, till all were gone. And Jesus was left behind alone--and the woman in the center of the court.
Then, raising His head, Jesus said to her,
"Where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
     "No one, Sir," she replied.

"And I do not condemn you either," said Jesus; "go, and from this time do not sin any more." John 8:2-11 (WNT)

Let your heart be changed, and make prayer to God that you may have forgiveness for your evil thoughts. Acts 8:22 (BBE)

We are made right in God's sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done. For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard. Yet now God in His gracious kindness declares us not guilty. He has done this through Christ Jesus, who has freed us by taking away our sins. Romans 3:22-24 (NLT)

Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to its lustful desires. Do not let any part of your body become a tool of wickedness, to be used for sinning. Instead, give yourselves completely to God since you have been given new life. And use your whole body as a tool to do what is right for the glory of God. Romans 6:12-13 (NLT)

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23 (KJV)

[In the following passage, the apostle Paul warns us of hidden dangers. He was a strict disciplinarian who had little trouble keeping the Ten Commandments. Things like lying, stealing, adultery and murder could be kept under control fairly easily. But there are hidden invisible sins such as covet, lust, anger and greed that can be just as difficult to master. Jesus mentioned in the Sermon on the Mount that these invisible sins can have the same toxic effect on us as the more outward actions of adultery, theft and murder.]
I do not understand the things I do. I do not do what I want to do, and I do the things I hate… But I am not really the one who is doing these hated things; it is sin living in me that does them. Yes, I know that nothing good lives in me -- I mean nothing good lives in the part of me that is earthly and sinful. I want to do the things that are good, but I do not do them… So if I do things I do not want to do, then I am not the one doing them. It is sin living in me that does those things… What a miserable man I am! Who will save me from this body that brings me death? I thank God for saving me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So in my mind I am a slave to God's Law, but in my sinful self I am a slave to the law of sin. Romans 7:15, 17-18, 20, 24-25 (NCV™)

Those who live as their human nature tells them to, have their minds controlled by what human nature wants. Those who live as the Spirit tells them to, have their minds controlled by what the Spirit wants. To be controlled by human nature results in death; to be controlled by the Spirit results in life and peace. And so people become enemies of God when they are controlled by their human nature; for they do not obey God's law, and in fact they cannot obey it. Those who obey their human nature cannot please God. Romans 8:5-8 (GNT)

So, my brothers and sisters, we must not be ruled by our sinful selves or live the way our sinful selves want. If you use your lives to do the wrong things your sinful selves want, you will die spiritually. But if you use the Spirit's help to stop doing the wrong things you do with your body, you will have true life. The true children of God are those who let God's Spirit lead them. Romans 8:12-14 (NCV™)

Pink and Yellow RanunculasDon't be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21 (WEB)

We should live decently, as people who live in the light of day. Wild parties, drunkenness, sexual immorality, promiscuity, rivalry, and jealousy cannot be part of our lives. Instead, live like the Lord Jesus Christ did, and forget about satisfying the desires of your sinful nature. Romans 13:13-14 (GOD’S WORD®)

I wrote you in my earlier letter not to associate with those who sin sexually. But I did not mean you should not associate with those of this world who sin sexually, or with the greedy, or robbers, or those who worship idols. To get away from them you would have to leave this world. I am writing to tell you that you must not associate with those who call themselves believers in Christ but who sin sexually, or are greedy, or worship idols, or abuse others with words, or get drunk, or cheat people. Do not even eat with people like that. 1 Corinthians 5:9-11 (NCV™)

Surely you know that the wicked will not possess God's Kingdom. Do not fool yourselves; people who are immoral or who worship idols or are adulterers or homosexual perverts or who steal or are greedy or are drunkards or who slander others or are thieves—none of these will possess God's Kingdom. Some of you were like that. But you have been purified from sin; you have been dedicated to God; you have been put right with God by the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God… The body is not to be used for sexual immorality, but to serve the Lord; and the Lord provides for the body. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, 13 (GNT)

Do you not know that whoever is joined to a loose woman becomes one body? "For the two," He said, "shall be as one flesh." But whoever is joined to the Lord is one spirit. Flee from fornication. Every sin whatsoever that a man commits is outside of the body, but whoever fornicates, sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your bodies are the Temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought at a great price. Glorify and carry God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:15-20 (CPDV)

Is it a good thing to have sexual relations? Certainly - but only within a certain context. It's good for a man to have a wife, and for a woman to have a husband. Sexual drives are strong, but marriage is strong enough to contain them and provide for a balanced and fulfilling sexual life in a world of sexual disorder. 1 Corinthians 7:1-2 (The Message)

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NKJV)

So we're not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without His unfolding grace. 2 Corinthians 4:16 (The Message)

For when I tried to keep the Law, I realized I could never earn God's approval. So I died to the Law so that I might live for God. I have been crucified with Christ. I myself no longer live, but Christ lives in me. So I live my life in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Galatians 2:19-20 (NLT)

Waterfalls in YosemiteFor, dear brothers, you have been given freedom: not freedom to do wrong, but freedom to love and serve each other… I advise you to obey only the Holy Spirit's instructions. He will tell you where to go and what to do, and then you won't always be doing the wrong things your evil nature wants you to do. For we naturally love to do evil things that are just the opposite from the things that the Holy Spirit tells us to do; and the good things we want to do when the Spirit has His way with us are just the opposite of our natural desires. These two forces within us are constantly fighting each other to win control over us, and our wishes are never free from their pressures. Galatians 5:13, 16-17 (TLB)

Now the works of the flesh are obvious; they are: fornication, adultery, homosexuality, lustfulness, the worshiping of idols, drug use, hostility, contentiousness, jealousy, wrath, quarrels, dissensions, divisions, envy, murder, drunkenness, orgies, and similar things. About these things, I continue to preach to you, as I have preached to you: that those who act in this way shall not obtain the Kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21 (CPDV)

Those who are Christ's have put to death on the cross the flesh with its passions and its evil desires. Galatians 5:24 (BBE)

If they plant to satisfy their sinful selves, their sinful selves will bring them ruin. But if they plant to please the Spirit, they will receive eternal life from the Spirit. Galatians 6:8 (NCV™)

You were taught to leave your old self -- to stop living the evil way you lived before. That old self becomes worse, because people are fooled by the evil things they want to do. But you were taught to be made new in your hearts, to become a new person. That new person is made to be like God -- made to be truly good and holy… Do not give the devil a way to defeat you. Ephesians 4:22-24, 27 (NCV™)

Don't let sexual sin, perversion of any kind, or greed even be mentioned among you. This is not appropriate behavior for God's holy people. It's not right that dirty stories, foolish talk, or obscene jokes should be mentioned among you either. Instead, give thanks to God. You know very well that no person who is involved in sexual sin, perversion, or greed (which means worshiping wealth) can have any inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and of God. Ephesians 5:3-5 (GOD’S WORD®)

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. Colossians 3:2 (NRSV)

God wants you to be holy and to stay away from sexual sins. He wants each of you to learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable. Don't use your body for sexual sin like the people who do not know God. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 (NCV™)

Abstain from all appearance of evil. 1 Thessalonians 5:22 (KJV)

Stay away from lusts which tempt young people. Pursue what has God's approval. Pursue faith, love, and peace together with those who worship the Lord with a pure heart. 2 Timothy 2:22 (GOD’S WORD®)

Inasmuch as He has Himself felt the pain of temptation and trial, He is also able instantly to help those who are tempted and tried. Hebrews 2:18 (WNT)

Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV)

Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled: but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers. Hebrews 13:4 (WEB)

Therefore put away all filthiness and rank growth of wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted Word, which is able to save your souls. James 1:21 (RSV)

Stained Glass Window Pentecost PeterTherefore, prepare your minds for action, be sober and set your hope perfectly on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ -- as children of obedience, not conforming yourselves according to your former lusts as in your ignorance, but just as He who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all of your behavior. 1 Peter 1:13-15 (WEB)

My loved ones, I make this request with all my heart, that, as those for whom this world is a strange country, you will keep yourselves from the desires of the flesh which make war against the soul. 1 Peter 2:11 (BBE)

Curb every passion, and be on the alert. Your great accuser, the Devil, is going about like a roaring lion to see whom he can devour. 1 Peter 5:8 (WNT)

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 (KJV)

Don't love the world, neither the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father's love isn't in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, isn't the Father's, but is the world's. The world is passing away with its lusts, but he who does God's will remains forever. 1 John 2:15-17 (WEB)

"I correct and discipline everyone I love. Take this seriously, and change the way you think and act." Revelation 3:19 (GOD’S WORD®)
