God's Words of Comfort

A Portion of God's Holy Word Regarding:

Addictions – Alcohol – Drugs – Obesity – Tobacco – Pornography – Abstinence – Temperance

[I just wanted to throw in my two cents worth here, in that many here in America are controlled by their addictions. We’re addicted to overeating, smoking, drugs (both prescribed and illegal), gambling, sexual sins, pornography, and so on. Experts in the field explain that these people feel an emptiness, pain, or loneliness in their lives. In order to rid or mask these feelings, people will often turn toward alcohol, food, drugs and other things which can lead to an addictive lifestyle for relief or escape. The reasons are many for this escape – problems at home, school, work, with relationships, peer pressure, divorce, health issues, heartaches, and countless more.
When you don’t have God in your life, you are defenseless against the evil one - …”your enemy, the Devil, is going about like a roaring lion to see whom he can devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)
I recently read an article regarding pornography that was alarming (“How many Porn Addicts are in Your Church?” by Mike Genung, 2007). I quote, “Could half of Christian men have a problem with porn, as so many of the statistics say? Porn is reported to be a 12 billion dollar industry in the U.S… 50 percent of men viewed pornography within one week of attending a Promise Keepers stadium event… 54 percent of pastors said they viewed porn within the past year in a Pastors.com survey… In a 2003 Focus on the Family poll 47 percent of respondents said pornography is a problem in their home.” That sounds like a problem to me.
There are many books and websites by experts, doctors and other professional counselors out there to help those struggling with addiction issues in their lives. I do not pretend to have answers for these problems and addictions, but here are some helpful hints. Obviously, you must be strong and avoid places where gambling, and/or smoking, and/or drinking are done. I know it sounds overly simplistic, but you have to avoid subjecting yourselves to these temptations. Ask friends not to smoke or drink around you. Overeaters need to avoid the buffet line, because you know you will eat more food than you need, “to get your money’s worth” (I know that one well, that’s one of my excuses!) Guys, you have to stop renting videos from places that offer adult films, because you run the risk of being lured to the X-rated shelves. Rent your videos from stores that don’t offer X-rated titles, there are some around if you look. We all know that some of the R-rated movies are bad enough.
Additionally, try and find people who have had similar addictions and were able to break free from them. Find out how they did it and remain in contact with them, so that they can encourage you and offer support. By having a mentor, so to speak, it also helps to keep you more accountable for your actions and progress. Start listening to Christian music, such as rock, worship and praise, or hymns, at home or in your car. Tune your radios to Christian stations, or listen to teaching or preaching tapes/CDs for support and to bolster your spirits.
Get a pack or two of our “Comfort Cards” that deal with your situation (such as Addictions, Anger, Lust, Patience, Sin, Temptation or whatever) and read them frequently during the day. The cards are small and convenient enough to carry in a pocket or purse, and they’ll help give you reminders to stay on track, keeping yourself away from those temptations.
But the most important first step on your road to breaking free of your addiction is getting on your knees and asking God for help, to come into your life and take over. Know that the power of God is more than sufficient to help you break free of any addiction, or problem, that you may be facing. Acknowledge your situation before Him, and He will help you. It may not happen over night, (although some have been cured instantly!) but if you let God work in you, you will truly begin to feel those temptations coming less and less frequently. Get into the habit of praying and reading the Word of God daily for wisdom and strength.]

Therefore watch yourselves very carefully. Deuteronomy 4:15 (ESV)

Purple StaticeListen, my child, be wise and give serious thought to the way you live. Don't associate with people who drink too much wine or stuff themselves with food. Drunkards and gluttons will be reduced to poverty. If all you do is eat and sleep, you will soon be wearing rags. Proverbs 23:19-21 (GNT)

Show me people who drink too much, who have to try out fancy drinks, and I will show you people who are miserable and sorry for themselves, always causing trouble and always complaining. Their eyes are bloodshot, and they have bruises that could have been avoided. Don't let wine tempt you, even though it is rich red, and it sparkles in the cup, and it goes down smoothly. The next morning you will feel as if you had been bitten by a poisonous snake. Weird sights will appear before your eyes, and you will not be able to think or speak clearly. You will feel as if you were out on the ocean, seasick, swinging high up in the rigging of a tossing ship. "I must have been hit," you will say; "I must have been beaten up, but I don't remember it. Why can't I wake up? I need another drink." Proverbs 23:29-35 (GNT)

Stained Glass BlessingYou are doomed! Heroes of the wine bottle! Brave and fearless when it comes to mixing drinks... So now, just as straw and dry grass shrivel and burn in the fire, your roots will rot and your blossoms will dry up and blow away, because you have rejected what the Lord Almighty, Israel's holy God, has taught us. Isaiah 5:22, 24 (GNT)

Jesus answered him, saying, "It is written, 'That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word of God.'" Luke 4:4 (KJV)

So be careful, or your hearts will be loaded down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day will come on you suddenly. [The following passage refers to the miracles Jesus performed when He fed a crowd of 5,000 people with just five loaves of bread and two fish (Matthew 14:13-21); and again when He fed a crowd of 4,000 with seven loaves of bread and a few small fish (Matthew 15:32-39). There were many baskets of leftovers collected after each such occasion:]
Jesus answered, "I am telling you the truth: you are looking for Me because you ate the bread and had all you wanted, not because you understood My miracles. Do not work for food that spoils; instead, work for the food that lasts for eternal life. This is the food which the Son of Man will give you, because God, the Father, has put His mark of approval on Him." John 6:26-27 (GNT)

Jesus said unto them, "I am the bread of Life: he that cometh to Me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on Me shall never thirst." John 6:35 (KJV)

"I have told you all this so that you may have peace in Me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world." John 16:33 (NLT)

For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the Law, but under grace. Romans 6:14 (KJV)

I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate… For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out… Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the Law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another Law waging war against the Law of my mind and making me captive to the Law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the Law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin. Romans 7:15, 18, 20-25 (ESV)

SlowMO waterfallFor if men are controlled by their earthly natures, they give their minds to earthly things. If they are controlled by their spiritual natures, they give their minds to spiritual things. Because for the mind to be given up to earthly things means death; but for it to be given up to spiritual things means Life and peace. Romans 8:5-6 (WNT)

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. Romans 8:26 (NRSV)

If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. With the heart one believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth one confesses, resulting in salvation. Romans 10:9-10 (HCSB)

The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. Romans 13:12-14 (NKJV)

Let's stop criticizing each other. Instead, you should decide never to do anything that would make other Christians have doubts or lose their faith. The Lord Jesus has given me the knowledge and conviction that no food is unacceptable in and of itself. But it is unacceptable to a person who thinks it is. So if what you eat hurts another Christian, you are no longer living by love. Don't destroy anyone by what you eat. Christ died for that person. Romans 14:13-15 (GOD’S WORD®)

Do not, because of food, destroy what God has done. All foods may be eaten, but it is wrong to eat anything that will cause someone else to fall into sin. The right thing to do is to keep from eating meat, drinking wine, or doing anything else that will make other believers fall. Romans 14:20-21 (GNT)

Don't you know that the unrighteous will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don't be deceived. Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor extortioners, will inherit the Kingdom of God. Such were some of you, but you were washed. But you were sanctified. But you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and in the Spirit of our God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 (WEB)

Don't you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (WEB)

Do not deceive yourselves: "Evil companionships corrupt good morals." Wake from this drunken fit; live righteous lives, and cease to sin; for some have no knowledge of God: I speak thus in order to move you to shame. 1 Corinthians 15:33-34 (WNT)

But thanks be to God, who made us His captives and leads us along in Christ's triumphal procession. Now wherever we go He uses us to tell others about the Lord and to spread the Good News like a sweet perfume. Our lives are a fragrance presented by Christ to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those being saved and by those perishing. 2 Corinthians 2:14-15 (NLT)

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit,Tioga and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Galatians 5:16 (KJV)

If your spiritual nature is your guide, you are not subject to Moses' Laws. Now, the effects of the corrupt nature are obvious: illicit sex, perversion, promiscuity, idolatry, drug use, hatred, rivalry, jealousy, angry outbursts, selfish ambition, conflict, factions, envy, drunkenness, wild partying, and similar things. I've told you in the past and I'm telling you again that people who do these kinds of things will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Galatians 5:18-21 (GOD’S WORD®)

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their own sinful selves. They have given up their old selfish feelings and the evil things they wanted to do. Galatians 5:24 (NCV™)

In the Lord's name, then, I warn you: do not continue to live like the heathen, whose thoughts are worthless and whose minds are in the dark. They have no part in the life that God gives, for they are completely ignorant and stubborn. They have lost all feeling of shame; they give themselves over to vice and do all sorts of indecent things without restraint. Ephesians 4:17-19 (GNT)

Don't be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, let the Holy Spirit fill and control you. Ephesians 5:18 (NLT)

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints. Ephesians 6:10-18 (ESV)

For there are those, of whom I have given you word before, and do so now with sorrow, who are haters of the cross of Christ; Whose end is destruction, whose god is the stomach, and whose glory is in their shame, whose minds are fixed on the things of the earth. Philippians 3:18-19 (BBE)

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13 (WEB)

My God will use His wonderful riches in Christ Jesus to give you everything you need. Philippians 4:19 (NCV™)

Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth. Colossians 3:2 (WEB)

She who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives. 1 Timothy 5:6 (NKJV)

All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (HCSB)

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, instructing us to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we would live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world. Titus 2:11-12 (WEB)

People are tempted when their own evil desire leads them away and traps them. This desire leads to sin, and then the sin grows and brings death. James 1:14-15 (NCV™)

Wherever there is jealousy and rivalry, there is disorder and every kind of evil. James 3:16 (GOD’S WORD®)

Mountain windsurferSubmit therefore to God: resist the Devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and make your hearts pure, you who are half-hearted towards God. James 4:7-8 (WNT)

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour. 1 Peter 5:8 (KJV)

People are slaves to whatever masters them. 2 Peter 2:19 (NRSV)

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. 1 John 2:15 (KJV)

As for you, dear children, you are God's children, and have successfully resisted them; for greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. 1 John 4:4 (WNT)

Whatever is born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world: your faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 1 John 5:4-5 (WEB)

"Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear My voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with Me." Revelation 3:20 (NRSV)

The rest of men, who were not slain by these afflictions, did not repent from the works of their hands, so that they would not worship demons, or idols of gold and silver and brass and stone and wood, which can neither see, nor hear, nor walk. And they did not repent from their murders, nor from their drugs, nor from their fornication, nor from their thefts. Revelation 9:20-21 (CPDV)
